Ajax Tavern
If you're looking to experience one of the most popular (and reasonably priced) restaurants in Aspen, look no further than the Ajax Tavern. Here you'll find a family atmosphere, plus a full bar and an award winning wine list.
The Tavern provides a cozy, mahogany-walled escape during the cold winter months, and during summer you can enjoy breathtaking views from the expansive deck.
The menu at Ajax's consists of "haute cuisine," which means high cookery. Dishes here come from a centuries old tradition of Italian cuisine which calls for plenty of fresh ingredients.
Bentley's at the Wheeler
Bentley's is a well known English tavern in Aspen that resides next door the the Wheeler Opera house.
Bentley's -- a charming building -- is decorated inside with movie posters and brass. The American style menu is extensive, and dishes range from a veggie melt sandwich and fries for $6 (not bad for Aspen) to nachos, vegetables and shrimp.
Hours are from 11 am to 2 am.
Boogies Diner
What's not to love about this 50's style diner? Rock and roll memorabilia decorate the walls, the wait staff is cheerful and the menu offers a myriad of choices to quench every palate. Boogies is vegetarian friendly -- try the monster chef salad or choose from a variety of other options. Alternatively, for those carnivores out there, there's plenty of meaty courses to dig your chops into, from the classic half-pound turkey and beef burgers, to a hot turkey sandwich.
Boogies offers an excellent selection of shakes and malts, a must for any 50's diner.
Krabloonik
Leave it to Krabloonik (Eskimo for "big eyebrows, and the owner's first lead dog) to mix these three ingredients: 200 sled dogs (Krabloonik is the largest dog kennel in the lower 48), a restaurant (who's menu primarily consists of wild game), and ski-in, ski-out accessibility.
Situated in a log cabin in Snowmass with huge windows (so you can watch teams of dog sleds come and go), the Krabloonik is well known for serving wild game dishes for for lunch or dinner. Lunch favorites are wild game burgers and roasted loin of New Zealand elk. Dinner (reservations are strongly suggested), try the caribou, smoked trout, elk, deer, quail and more -- or a combination of several.
Krabloonik is not to be missed.
Little Annie's Eating House
Annie's is the local's hang in Aspen, and for good reason. If your idea of a good time is feasting on fresh fish, barbecue chicken, ribs or lamb in a relaxed atmosphere (all at a reasonable price), then come to Annie's. The ambiance here consists of ultra-simple wood paneling and red and white tablecloths. If you're looking to get drinks, order the shot and beer special. For those with a sweet tooth (who doesn't?), try the irresistible Bundt cake.
New York Pizza of Aspen
Nothing satisfies the appetite better after a long day on the slopes than warm, fresh pizza (with plenty of zesty toppings) straight from of the oven.
New York Pizza is the place in Aspen for great service, specialty pizzas, sandwiches, beverages (including frosty beer) and more.
This pizza joint (located upstairs) is open after midnight too -- a rarity in Aspen. For those with colossal vegetarian cravings, try the Greek salad with lots of sun-dried tomatoes.
Pine Creek Cookhouse
The Pine Creek Cookhouse is more than a restaurant, it's an experience that you will never forget. To get there (in winter), you'll need cross-country skis or a horse-drawn sleigh (contact the Cookhouse to reserve your carriage. Note: make sure to pack warm layers!). You can hike or bike here in summer. Once you arrive at this homely log cabin, make sure to get a seat on the fabulous deck overlooking the Elk Mountains, and let the friendly staff take care of your needs. The dinner menu contains game specialties such as quail, elk, wild boar and more. Lunch: hot smoked salmon, salad, spinach crepes and Hungarian goulash are the specialties.
Reservations are required for lunch or dinner.
Piñons
Piñons is the hardest place to get a reservation (summer or winter) in Aspen and with good reason. This quintessential Aspen dining experience, with a Colorado-Western theme, has a creative southwestern-inspired menu and an extensive wine list. Appetizers at Piñons are unique, try the pheasant quesadilla with herbed goat cheese and peperonata or Prince Edward Island mussels in a puff pastry. Main courses consist of elk tenderloin, Colorado striped bass, grilled rack of lamb, New York steak, blackened pork tenderloin and more.
Weather permitting, be sure to get a seat on the outdoor patio and enjoy views of Aspen Mountain while dining.
Poppie's Bistro Café
Don't let the name mislead you – Poppie's is not a café, nor does it serve lunch. What it does offer is extraordinary cuisine: it's also one the most romantic eateries in Aspen, and is set in a beautiful Victorian building. Dining at Poppie's is relaxed and dimly lit –- take your time here while absorbing in the pleasant atmosphere.
At Poppie's, you'll fine such classic bistro dishes like steak au poivre in cognac cream sauce, and house dishes like the spicy Anaheim peppers stuffed with lobster and goat cheese. You'll also find an impressive wine list. Come to Poppie's if you're looking for a romantic and unforgettable evening.
Woody Creek Tavern
Woody Creek is a charming rustic tavern in Aspen. The décor here consists of walls covered in old news clippings and hodgepodge western memorabilia.
Dishes here consist of American and Mexican cuisine, including barbecued pork ribs, thick steaks and burgers (made with local, low-fat beef); plus organic salads, and a varied vegetarian menu.
While at Woody Creek, don't miss out on the house drink: fresh-squeezed lime-juice margaritas made with 100% blue-agave tequila.
Outside seating is available in summer.
